A ray of hope on Juneteenth
We take a moment today to recognize how far we've come, and how far we have still to go.
Today is Juneteenth, a day of commemoration that has finally received due recognition. This week we saw a ray of hope as Congress passed, and the White House signed, legislation declaring this day a national holiday. We take a moment to reflect, celebrate, and re-dedicate ourselves to the ongoing fight for equality.
While the Senate managed to agree on this symbolic gesture, they remain gridlocked over the fundamental issue of whether we should have the right to vote. That's why we have joined forces with Deadline for Democracy, and you'll be seeing regular messages from us supporting this national campaign for voting rights. Because when we mobilize, we win.
So what can you do this week? The Black Voters Matter Fund will kick off their tour in Georgia and end in Washington, D.C., making stops in key southern states along the way to rally with partner organizations, meet with voters, and discuss the issues impacting our communities. You can RSVP here to join them for one of their events!
Also, we all must take action to get the Senate to pass S1, the For the People Act. The bill will be brought up for a vote this week. Weโd love you to ๐call your Senators ๐ and tell them you support the bill.
But, we recognize that with the filibuster still in place, it's unlikely to pass this week. That doesn't mean we can't get it done. What we need next is to get loud -- really loud -- while our Senators are home during recess. And thatโs where you come in. Weโre going to be spending the June 28-July 10 recess fighting hard to get the For the People Act passed. After you call your senators, head over to Deadline for Democracy and sign up to host or attend an event. ๐ฃ๐ฃ๐ฃ
